This is the final render of the steampunk gear.

Here is my first attempt at modeling a steampunk gear. I thought it's a good reference to start with.

ree

When I tried to model it in Blender, I noticed that there were too many teeth. So, I asked a teacher to send me a similar reference.

ree

This is the reference he wants me to work with. It looks similar than the first one.

Here is a work in progress I'm working with. But, I had an issue with the teeth to make it thicker.

Here is a step by step Instructions to make a cog:

Step 1. Start with a new file and add a reference photo in the center.

ree

Step 2. Add a cylinder with 32 segments.

ree

Step 3. Rotate the cylinder in 90 degrees. Try to scale it in the y camera.

ree

Step 4. Resize the cylinder by using the scale tool. On the bottom left corner of the resize box, set the scale.

ree

Step 5. Add the cube and go to Edit Mode.

ree

Step 6. Use vertex select and move the vertices to match the reference.

ree

Step 7. I can also go to wireframe mode and match as close as possible.

ree

Step 8. If I were to rotate in the x camera, I noticed that the tooth is too wide.

ree

Step 9, Adjust the tooth in the y camera and scale it in.

ree

Step 10. Go to Object Mode, press Shift D and right click to rotate so I have two teeth.

ree

Step 11. Repeat the process and it's done.
